Over a million immigrants

The National Statistics Institute appeared to be at the centre of a storm, after it revealed that over a million immigrants were living in Spain illegally, and forming part of a huge "submerged" economy. This has also brought further pressure on Labour Minister Jesus Caldera, whose department closed its "legalise every immigrant no questions asked" programme last May, with the Minister declaring at the time that the problem of the illegal immigrants was finished for good. According to the figures from the NSI, there are 2,597,014 immigrants living in Spain legally, but according to the latest Population Census that was recently approved by the cabinet, there are some 3,800,000 foreigners living in the country.
